Retreating to the 2000-era Internet

Blog author, Michael Klaas, stands on a rocky point of Mauna Kea looking out toward the silhouette of Mauna Loa in the distance. Above and below him are clouds amidst a blue sky.

The era of commonly-shared, fun social media is dead. It’s been dead for a bit. We’re all just adjusting to the new reality: A wasteland of algorithm-pushed AI garbage, rage-bait and disinformation in the legacy platforms and fractured audiences in a small handful of new — as yet undefiled — platforms.

Meanwhile, the oligarchs, Zuck & Musk, work feverishly to make their existing services worse.

I will not lend them my eyeballs anymore.

Twitter is long gone for me. Deleted my account shortly after Musk took over, having understood the way things would go. I was an early BlueSky adopter and enjoy that service as a Twitter replacement and will continue to until some oligarch gets his hands on it and ruins it like they ruin everything else.

Though my usage of Meta platforms has waned dramatically over the last few years, I’m still on Facebook and Instagram occasionally, just to keep up with a few friends who are still active posters or to share a thing or two myself. But, starting today I will not be, and I may even delete my accounts soon.

But I do not want to lose touch! Hence, this website. An easy to remember URL (it’s just my name dot com). A simple blog where you’ll get some information on what I’m up to and thinking about… Maybe even more than you’ve been getting from Facebook or Instagram lately.

It’s not bi-directional, though. And I hate that for us. So, come find me on one of the services that I can still stand to use:

  1. BlueSky – I’m most active here. As this is a platform where a lot of political engagement occurs, if you and I are opposed, it might not be the best option for you.
  2. Goodreads – If you like books, I’m here & use it regularly. I’d love to find a functional alternative to this site that isn’t owned by Bezos, but none of the ones in development are very good.
  3. Fable – Another book-centric service, but this one is only an app.
  4. Signal – End-to-end encrypted messaging service. Please feel free to send me a message there! My user name is: CascadianRain.99
  5. Strava – If you want to engage in fitness journey stuff, come follow me here! I’ve had the account for many years, but have been quite active since the start of 2025.
  6. Mastodon – I really don’t use this often, but it is likely to remain as an active account for me after all other social media has fallen away, so it’s a solid choice for getting in touch.

I’ll try to keep this list up-to-date so you can always reference it. It was last modified on…
